A DANCE student from Mildenhall has been offered the chance of a lifetime thanks to a £30,000 tuition grant.
Gareth Lloyd received the government-funded grant after being offered a place on a performing arts course at London college, The Centre.

The 17 year old secured his place on the three-year course after impressing judges at an audition over the summer.

He said: "I can't begin to explain how I feel. I am absolutely over the moon about receiving the grant as it is a once in life time opportunity. It's such a big shock as it was not planned."

Dance teacher Kimberley Bullock, of Kats dance group, added: "I am so proud of him. He has had to work so hard to reach this point."

Until last summer Gareth was going through a troubled period.

"I started hanging around with the wrong people and was going down the wrong road. My mum would be worried and I was fortunate I didn't get into trouble with the police," he said.

"Kim and her mum have definitely saved my life."

Gareth, of Clare Close, then joined Mildenhall-based drama group the Bunbury Players, following in the footsteps of his mum and late granddad.

It was while helping to direct a show for the group he received the inspiration to take up dancing.

"I saw Kim do a solo routine during the show and I thought to myself that is what I want to do. So, I started to look into dance lessons with her," he explained.

Since joining Kats last June and taking up a performing arts course at West Suffolk College, the teenager's dancing has improved rapidly.

In addition to being offered a place in London, he and Kimberley have performed dance routines at a number of fetes across the region this summer.

Even though Gareth has the grant, he needs to find additional funding for uniforms, books and living costs. If you are interested in helping him or joining Kats, email Kimberley at kimberley_bullock@hotmail.co.uk.
