LAKENHEATH'S new-look village hall will be officially unveiled next month after undergoing a make-over.
The 86-year-old Peace Memorial Hall has been modernised following a three-year refurbishment programme to improve it for the many groups and organisations that use it.

As well as being completely redecorated, the hall has been fitted with new heat
ing, toilets, bar area and kitchen.

Peter Shepherd, a former treasurer of the hall's trustees, said: "It is like a new hall within the shell of the existing building.

"The hall is the emergency centre for Lakenheath so if there is a calamity such as a fire, people will automatically be sent to the village hall. That is another reason why we decided we had to improve the facilities."

Around 160 guests, including sponsors, donors and local councillors, will pack the hall on August 20 to celebrate its reopening.

BBC Look East news presenter Susie Fowler-Watt will cut a ribbon and unveil a plaque, which will be displayed in the entrance.

The building is regularly used by local groups and holds a number of village activities, including line dancing, ballet classes and a parent and toddler group.

It was last refurbished 30 years ago.

Grants were received from a number of organisations, including Suffolk County Council, Lloyds TSB and the Big Lottery fund.

Donations from local residents and fundraising events also helped towards the cost.
