LAKENHEATH greyhound trainer Mark Wallis will forever be in the history books after he sent out the last winner before Walthamstow Stadium closed on Saturday.
The 2005 champion trainer produced 9/4 chance Mountjoy Diamond to take the Last Race Stakes at the Chingford Road venue in front of 7,000 spectators.
Mr Wallis said: “The atmosphere and pure magic of Walthamstow was unbelievably captured on Saturday. The crowd’s reaction before the last race went off and our Mountjoy Diamond bowling along in front will live in my memory forever. It is a big loss for greyhound racing.”
The trainer, who took over the helm at Imperial Kennels three years ago, will now race his 40 to 50 graded dogs at Harlow, Essex, while his open race dogs will continue to run across the country.
“I’m sure with Harlow being in close proximity to Walthamstow it will look to benefit from its closure and standards should rise. As it stands, four of us are transferring from Walthamstow to Harlow,” said Mr Wallis.
The popular London venue, which has held racing on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for 75 years, closed it gates for the last time on Saturday following its sale to property developers L and Q.
A campaign to save the famous venue has gathered pace over the past few months in the hope that dog racing will one day return to one of the sport’s flagship tracks.
The former champion trainer added:“There has been a lot of effort in trying to save it and it may well come back in the future.”
In addition to taking the last race, the Lakenheath handler also sent out Butterbridge Ali who set a never-to-be-beaten track record over 640 metres with a time of 39.16 in the Final Stow Stayers race.
