Summer Tea Concert, King's School, Ely
The fourth Summer Tea Concert at the King's School Ely was packed – the audience knew they were in for a treat as visiting students from Hong Kong played a variety of piano pieces from the recommended repertoire of the Associated Board Royal Schools of Music.
Tutored by Duncan Stafford, Professor Raymond Banning and Professor Clara Taylor, the students charmed the listeners with works that ranged from intimate solos to massive pieces for up to 5 players at the piano at the same time.
Highlights included a lively "Jamaican Rumba" by Arthur Benjamin played by Alice Ho and Jessie Au, a mesmerising performance of "Prayer of the Matador" by Dello Joio played by Barron Hui and a virtuosic performance ot "Autumn Crocus" by Billy Mayerl played by Jacqueline Fung. Further highlights were Timmy Chan's performance of Chopin's "Nocturne in Eb major" op. 9 no.2. and Alice Ho's performance of "Danza de la Moza Dorosa No.2." by Ginastera.
Enchanting introductions, a strong sense of stage presence and a delightfully varied programme made the concert a most entertaining event. It culminated in an amazing relay with students playing a continuous piano duet arrangement of "So Long Farewell" by Rodgers from "The Sound of Music". They did not miss a beat. We certainly look forward to next year's event.
