Philip Pullman to discuss his Grimm Tales
Acclaimed author Philip Pullman will read extracts from his collection of Grimm Tales for Young and Old at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge on Tuesday, 27 November at 7.30pm.
Pullman’s latest work is a retelling of 50 stories that were amongst those first published 200 years ago this year by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm.
The His Dark Materials author will discuss his selection, which is published by Penguin Classics, and his approach to re-telling the Grimm Tales with Dr Mick Gowar, Senior Lecturer in Contextual Studies at Anglia Ruskin.
Dr Gowar said: “I’ve known Philip for several years, and he has become a great supporter of our faculty, in particular our work concerning traditional storytelling and folk tales.
“Philip will read a couple of his reworked Grimm Tales and then take part in a fairly informal conversation session. There will be plenty of opportunity for the audience to ask questions about his retelling of the Grimm Tales and how his interest in folk and fairy tales has informed his other writing.
“As Philip said himself in the foreword to the book, these retellings aren’t major reworkings of the originals but are intended to be versions that are as ‘clear as water’.
“He has also produced excellent notes at the end of each story, highlighting interesting details and comparisons with other books. His notes are especially well judged for a general readership, and are another highlight of this edition.”
