Newmarket to host Festival preview night
STARS of the racing world are to come together in Newmarket next month to stage a charity Cheltenham Festival preview night.
Organisers, Star Sports bookmakers, have decided to run the event on Friday, March 9, after an inaugural show last year attracted more than 200 people.
In the hope of getting a bigger crowd, this year’s event has been switched to the Memorial Hall, Newmarket, from the Swynford Hotel, Six Mile Bottom.
“With the success of last year’s event we felt we needed a bigger venue and the Memorial Hall fits the bill,” said Luke Tarr, spokesman for Star Sports.
“As the hall is in the centre of town there will be an increased footfall so we are hoping to get more than the 200 that turned up last year.
“It promises to be a great night.”
Heading this year’s panel is Paul Webber, trainer of Cheltenham Gold Cup contender Time For Rupert.
Mr Webber will be joined by former National Hunt jockey Steve Smith-Eccles, leading racing journalist Claude Duval, bloodstock agent Anthony Bromley and Mr Tarr from Star Sports.
A live bookmaker’s pitch highlighting the latest festival odds will be in action throughout the night, along with a bar supplied by town pub the Waggon and Horses.
Money raised from the event will go to racing charity Racing Welfare.
“We are delighted with the line-up that has been assembled,” said Richard Negus, fundraising and communications executive.
“Last year’s event was a great success and this year’s one we hope will be even better.”
Tickets for the evening which starts at 7pm cost £7.50 in advance and £10 on the night.
They can be purchased by contacting Racing Welfare on 01638 560763 or by visiting their office at Robin McAlpine House, Park Lane, Newmarket.
