Get in a spin to boost hospice

Fitness fans will be climbing on their bikes and getting their blood pumping for a high-energy fundraiser in Newmarket next month.

Newmarket Leisure Centre is hosting a 12-hour spinathon in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care on Saturday, March 3, from 7.30am until 7.30pm.

Spinning instructor, Pete Mahon, is challenging people to spin for one hour or the full 12, with bikes available by the hour or the full session.

“Holding such a long spinathon is unique,” said Pete. “I instruct quite a lot of spinning at the leisure centre and every six weeks we do an extended spin, which is a little bit more challenging. Last time, I said ‘What do you reckon to a 12-hour spin?’, and we went from there.”

Spaces have just gone on sale, and already 16 of the 20 bikes available for the full 12 hours have been booked. However, bikes allocated for the one-hour sessions are still available.

“My inspiration for getting involved was to support a good local charity,” said Pete.

“I lost my mum to cancer in Tenerife and they have got a very different way of doing things over there and don’t believe in people dying in hospital.

“I went over there when she was in hospital, but I had to take her home to die.

“I’m going to instruct the whole 12 hours. I have designed the rides so we should all be able to last the distance.

“In terms of endurance, I have done long cycle rides before – for 60 to 70 hours – and cross-country skiing. On the day, I will be focused on making sure everyone taking part does not work too hard.”

Anglia Community Leisure has donated the studio space and bikes for the event and in addition to the spinathon, Pete and co-organiser Donna Wallis, are holding a raffle to raise extra funds, with many prizes already donated by local businesses.

To book a spinathon place call the leisure centre on 01638 782500. Places cost £5.20 per hour or £60 for 12 hours.
