Broadway beckons for town actors

A GROUP of Soham youngsters will see their names in lights when they jet off to America later this year to perform on Broadway.

The town’s Viva Youth Theatre will perform Fame the Musical at the Playgroup Theatre in New York on July 28.

“We’re all incredibly excited,” said Dan Schumann, who founded Viva some 15 years ago.

“Chances like this - going to New York to perform - don’t come along very often in life and to give the children this opportunity is just wonderful.”

The group will be working with professional choreographers, voice and acting coaches to help polish and shape the musical they will perform in Soham before they leave.

“We will be taking just part of the cast who put on the show here in Soham on July 11, 12 and 13. They will have workshops with professional Broadway choreographers, musical directors and directors before performing to a fee-paying audience of up to 250 people,” Mr Schumann said.

“It’s going to be a lot of hard work but enormous fun too and a fantastic experience I hope the young people will treasure for a lifetime.”

Auditions for Fame thee Musical will be held on Thursday, February 9, at Soham Village College at 7pm and are open to anyone aged 11 to 25.

The cost of the trip to New York includes flights, accommodation, breakfast, dinner at the Stardust Cafe and a ticket to a show, a guide for the seven-day trip and all tuition.

The home shows on July 11,12 and 13 at The Brook, Soham, begin at 7.30pm, ticket details of which will be announced soon.

Tickets are still available for Viva Youth Theatre’s current production Smike The Musical, based on the story of Nicholas Nickelby by Charles Dickens.

The show runs from February 2-4 at 7.30pm with a matinee on February 4 at 2.30pm. Tickets are £8 (£7 concessions). Call 01353 722228 or email vivayouth@hotmail.co.uk to book.
