Shakespeare’s Local by Pete Brown

If you ever find yourself nursing a pint of ale at the George Inn, near London Bridge, you are in one of the most famous pubs in the world. In the 600 years it’s been pouring drinks, it’s regular patrons have included Shakespeare, who would sink a few after a night at The Globe theatre, Geoffrey Chaucer, who’d stop in to plan his journey to Canterbury, and Charles Dickens who would regale those present with stories of ghosts and angels. From murderers and street walkers to society men and women, The George has welcomed them all and celebrates each and every one of them in this fascinating new book.

Red - The Waterstones Anthology

Open this beautiful little hardback at page one and the world dissolves around you in a haze of delightful relaxation.

With short stories, poems and essays written by some of the biggest names in contemporary writing, RED is a fantastic book for anyone who likes to read an eclectic selection of works rather than stick to the same well trodden genre. With original contributions from Will Self, Hanif Kureishi, Max Hastings, Victoria Hislop and Andrew Motion to name but a few, this is book to read and love until the time comes to pass it on to a friend, loved one or anyone who has a profound passion for the written word.

My Old Man by John Major

Tom Major first trod the boards at the age of 21 and became something of a celebrity in the brightly lit world of music hall.

His son, former Conservative Prime minister John Major wants to tell you all about him and at the same time, tell the story of song and dance men all over the country who opened our eyes and ears to a world far removed from the poverty and squalor the country dealt with on a daily basis.

A light-hearted and brilliantly researched look at a world long since replaced by cinema and video games.BK Tom Major first trod the boards at the age of 21 and became something of a celebrity in the brightly lit world of music hall.

The Good Pub Guide 2013

The 27 pages dedicated to Suffolk in this book are well worth studying but the rest is good, too.

This is the perfect book to keep in the glove box just under the roadmaps and the travel sweets as wherever you may find yourself, you want to be sure that the place you stop at is everything you hope a good pub will be.

With so many established pubs disappearing, it has never been more important to support your local and this excellent book can not only help you find one, it can tell you what to look for once you have.
