A musical thank you for soldiers’ charity

Grandfather Richard Everett will sing his heart out later this month in Newmarket at a concert he has organised to raise money for the charities that helped his soldier grandson when he was injured in Afghanistan.

Secretary of St Edmundsbury Male Voice Choir, Richard, and the choir, have linked up with The Minden Band of The Queen’s Division for a charity concert to raise funds for Help for Heroes and The Royal Anglian Regiment Benevolent Charity.

The concert will be at Tattersalls, on Saturday February 26 at 7.30pm.

Mr Everett’s grandson, Private Mark Allen, was seriously injured while serving with the 1st Battalion The Royal Anglian Regiment in Afghanistan in 2010 and he said this was his way of saying thank you for the help and support from the two charities.

The Bury St Edmunds-based male choir was formed in 1988 by a group of local schoolteachers and now has a membership of some 80 choristers. Most of their concerts are in aid of charity and over the years they have raised considerable funds.

Mr Everett said the choir was always keen to sing in concerts, especially for charitable causes and the committee was very supportive of this concert in view of the two charities concerned and his close connection with them.

It is hoped the concert will raise more than £5,000.

The Minden Band of The Queen’s Division, under the baton of its director of music Major Bruce Miller and bandmaster Warrant Officer Class One Ben Mason, takes its name from the Suffolk Regiment’s most famous battle Honour – Minden, in Germany. The band has recently completed a tour as duty band at The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.

The band and the choir will perform individually and combined, presenting traditional favourites alongside more contemporary works such as Songs from the Shows.

Tickets which are £10 are available from the National Horseracing Museum, Newmarket and Churchgate Books and Balaam’s Music in Bury St Edmunds or by post (enclosing a SAE and cheque made payable to SEMVC) from RHQ The Royal Anglian Regiment, The Keep, Gibraltar Barracks, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 3RN.
