FOLLOWING the devastating fire at St Felix Middle School, I was asked by Tony Bavington, the headteacher, to organise an event for past and present pupils and members of the community who wished to mark this awful event.
I am writing to thank the many hundreds of people whose contributions, in person and in cards, letters, emails and text messages, made Regeneration such a moving event.

Without the tireless work of Tracey Botwright, head of Music, and Melanie Da
vies, head of English, and the generous sponsors from the community, it would not have been possible.

It was wonderful to meet so many people who I thought had moved out of my life. I am only sorry that time did not permit me to talk to everyone present.

St Felix is so much more than a building. St Felix is unique. The school has always stood for innovation, determination and success, and these qualities have been much in evidence this August.

All the staff immediately returned to work and began the enormous task of creating a school from absolutely nothing.

Of course, we are grateful for all the support we have received, especially from the three local schools – Laureate, Houldsworth Valley and Newmarket College – who are helping us in the coming weeks.

But the burden of the work has and will continue to fall on the teachers and support staff. And, of course, they will rise to that challenge. St Felix always has done and always will.

It is no surprise to me that the school is ready again only five weeks later and continuing the outstanding work that Ofsted has reported on since the first inspection in 1996.

It is a privilege to come out of retirement to help with this task and to join the team that will continue to provide the best for the children of this area.
