I believe Suffolk County Council can claim roundabout heaven because the current scheme is an improvement on the previous attempts to keep the traffic flowing around Newmarket Clock Tower.
At the same time, I think we are justified claiming roundabout hell. While it is aesthetically nice to have some brown tarmac ahead of the roundabout, do drivers really understand why it is there?
Does the brown tarmac mean give way? In the short
time the new system has been in place, I have had to pull up on the roundabout to give way to traffic coming from the High Street going straight over on to Bury Road, seemingly unaware they are in fact entering a controlled junction.
Traffic would not see cars coming from Old Station Road as their view is blocked by the clock tower.
I have also come from Fordham Road and queued to turn right at the new roundabout to go down the High Street for cars further back to overtake the lane of queuing traffic and use the triangular paved areas to put one set of tyres on before they turn right ahead of you.
The roads approaching the roundabout widen out enough for two cars to squeeze next to each other. Is this how it was intended to be used because there does not appear to be enough room for two vehicles to navigate the roundabout at the same time? I have seen cars on the inside bumping over the raised time zones of the clock to avoid cars to their left.
To improve the current scheme, why not introduce white lines so everyone knows they should give way? Also, as you approach the roundabout, make two lanes.
If the left-hand lane was a dedicated next turn left this would assist traffic flow and keep that traffic away from the roundabout with all other traffic using the right-hand lane.
I still think the whole traffic system could be improved by turning the current system into a clockwise one-way system with free-flowing traffic and even a dedicated left-hand turn lane could be provided for Waitrose traffic (no stopping of traffic for a right hand turn).
Let's see if Ipswich will take account of any of the views of the local people who have to use this system day in and day out.

The only aspect of the new junction and roundabout that concerns me is the lack of road markings.
There are no giveway signs or any road markings apart from the different coloured road surface.
I find this slightly disconcerting as you have to be very aware of what is happening around you and ahead of you.
Regarding the comments about the illegal right turns when leaving Waitrose, I have witnessed this on many occasions and every time I have seen this happen it is done by taxis.
Why is it that taxi drivers seem to think they are above the law? They do three-point turns in the High Street, park on pavements and some have poor driving technique.
