IF THE proposals for the Clock Tower and Waitrose junction go ahead, it will be a disaster for the town resulting in gridlock and road rage.
Whoever designed it cannot possibly live, work or drive a car through Newmarket.

I implore residents to look at the plans as soon as possible.

Newmarket has been thriving like never before. The racing stables are full of horses and people wan
t to come to live here.

The infrastructure of any town is vital so why Suffolk County Council wants to deter people with such a poor road system is beyond me.

My solution would be to leave it like it is and simply remove all the temporary bollards and traffic lights.

I was reading the other day about a town in Holland of a similar size to Newmarket which completely removed all traffic lights and just advised the residents to be careful.

The result was a resounding success with flowing traffic and no accidents.

PERHAPS there is nothing more remote than a county council from district, town and parish councils as evidenced by Suffolk County Council ignoring local opinion over the clock tower improvements.

Councillor Guy McGregor said there have been more than 60 injury accidents there since 1991. Well, I would like to know the accident record since the last improvements a few years back?

The scenario does suggest that a unitary authority, hopefully with better chains of communication, is a case of the sooner the better.

Such matters as local roads would then be decided at district level in consultation with town and parish councils.

Unfortunately the county councillors are probably under pressure from "experts".

One does not know whether these are the same experts who have changed Newmarket's road systems over several years.

They could, of course, be specialists – that rare breed who learn more and more about less and less until they know absolutely everything about nothing.
