I WOULD like to clarify any misunderstandings regarding the proposed Sainsbury's store in Mildenhall.
The intended temporary car park on the Jubilee Fields will take up under one acre of the 20-acre site. It will not prevent football, dog walking or any community activities on the remaining 19 acres.
The temporary car park is not the Sainsbury's c
ar park – it is the town car park. The Sainsbury's car park is to the side of the proposed building.
Mildenhall Parish Council has always been insistent that there should be adequate free parking for the workers of Mildenhall requiring long-term parking.
Sainsbury's is funding the building of the car park on the Jubilee Fields but it is not, and never has been, Sainsbury's responsibility to relocate it. Negotiations are ongoing on a suitable site for the proposed relocation of the football club.
The location of the Sainsbury's store was presented at the public consultation and on the leaflet circulated to 10,000 addresses in and around the town as being on the existing site of the social club.
The parish council has a copy of a petition against the plans containing 360 signatures. Of these, 24 per cent are from people who do not live in Mildenhall parish.
Of the remaining signatures, 18 percent are from residents of Raven Close and Martins Close whose back gardens overlook Jubilee Fields .
It does appear, therefore, that objections from the people who live, work and shop in Mildenhall are not particularly robust.
The Sainsbury's store has been referred to as a superstore but, at approximately 25,000 square feet, it is not going to be one of the giants seen in out of town locations.
Lastly, the current store will be vacated when the new one is opened and will be available to other retailers.
Mildenhall Parish Council resolved to support the proposed Sainsbury's store in Mildenhall and continues to do so.
Cllr Teresa Gooch-Taylor-Balls
Chairman
Mildenhall Parish Council
