BILL Sadler, writing in his capacity as secretary of Newmarket Conservative Club (Journal, September 11), makes some rather strange comments.
Surely he cannot be serious when he implies that the ban on smoking in pubs, clubs and other public areas is wrong? Most people would now agree the ban was very wise legislation.
He suggests that his club will continue in existence until the elect
ion of a Conservative government. However, that could still be a very long way off.
Admittedly, the present Government does have its problems – many of which are caused by forces outside of the influence of any government – but if a new Tory leadership were to be anything like the Tory administration at Suffolk County Council, of which Cllr Sadler is a leading light, heaven help us.
Tory Suffolk has taken the decision to abolish our middle schools against the wishes of the majority of parents and teachers.
The county council recently appointed a new chief executive with a reported salary of more than £220,000; way above anything that was reasonable for such a post. Is this the sort of administration we could expect at national level?
Cllr Sadler was also one of those in charge at Forest Heath Council, which in 1999 took over from a Rainbow Alliance administration which was widely regarded as one of the most progressive, forward-thinking and well-run councils in the east of England.
Since that takeover, the Tories have managed to reduce Forest Heath to a shambles. They have no agenda for progress, no vision and frankly, no idea.
The new sports centre in Newmarket has taken years to progress from the final plans to building. It is now more than two years behind schedule and £6m over budget. It is still not fully completed.
The council built new public toilets in Newmarket with no proper provision for disabled access and introduced a car parking scheme which was ill-thought out and was, at times, akin to a farce.
A successful drop-in centre for young people in Brandon, funded by the Rainbow Alliance Council, has never been repeated in either Mildenhall or Newmarket. Presumably the Forest Heath Tories consider youth provision in these towns to be of no importance.
There seems to be something about Forest Heath Council these days which encourages the telling of tales which are at best far-fetched.
During the recent Red Lodge by-election, a prominent local Conservative told me the Liberal Democrat candidate had been a member of the Labour Party for many years but had changed to the Lib Dems because he thought that he had a better chance of winning.
This was totally untrue and, had the Conservatives bothered to check, they would have known it was untrue. But why bother when you can tell tall tales and hope to get away with it.
If Suffolk County Council and Forest Heath District Council are examples of Conservative government, may they long remain in opposition in the House of Commons.
Whatever problems the nation now faces would be made infinitely worse by a change of administration.
