Violet Cates

VIOLET Johnsey Cates, of Laureate Gardens, Newmarket, died at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, on March 5 after a short illness. She was 79.

Born in Newmarket, she attended All Saints' Primary School and the town's upper school.

In her schooldays, she was a good sprinter and had awards for running for the county.

A housewife and mother, she was devoted to her family and grandchildren, and spent hours doing crossword puzzles.

Mrs Cates, who was known as Johnny, is survived by her husband Frank, and leaves a son Gary, and four grandchildren, Liam, Rossana, Bethany and Adam.

Her funeral took place at Newmarket Cemetery Chapel on March 13 and the Rev Graham Locking officiated.

Family mourners were: Frank Cates (widower), Gary and Mary Cates (rep Liam), and Rossana, Bethany and Adam Cates.

Other mourners were: Glenys and Roger Smith (rep Selina and Robert Diston and family), Marina Appleton, Mary Grimes (Bill), Mr C Taylor, Mr and Mrs C Massie, Maureen and David Tysoe, Rita Farrell, Kath and Tom Gleave, Tim Gleave, Mr and Mrs P Billington, Mr and Mrs Graham MacGregor, Tessa MacGregor, Mr K Lister, Mr N Lister, Mr J Connor, Mr R Cates, Mr B Connor, Mary Camps, Ray Blasbery, Harry Jacobs, Sam Johnson, Evelyn King, Christine Wyman, Janet Newbegin, Pat Evens, Ian and Sue Willows, Mr and Mrs David Tyers, Mrs V Mansell, Mrs J Howell, Terry Connor, Adrian Grainger (family) and Valerie Fahey (Marie Connor).
