Vintage two-wheeled tribute to keen cyclist
A TEN-year-old boy paid the ultimate tribute to keen Burwell cyclist Colin Crabtree last week – by leading his funeral cortège to the church service on a penny-farthing bicycle.
Mr Crabtree, 74, who lived in The Paddocks, Burwell, was cycling along the B1102 Swaffham Road on the afternoon of January 26 when his bicycle was in collision with a motorbike.
Mr Crabtree died at the scene while the motorcyclist, a 41-year-old man from Swaffham Prior, remains in hospital with serious injuries.
At his funeral at the village’s St Mary’s Church on Friday, Andrew Kempton, dressed in his finest vintage clothing, led the cortège up the church path on his penny-farthing.
The tribute was organised by the Burwell Veteran and Vintage Bicycle Group, of which Andrew is a member.
Fellow member Paul Crask said: “Colin was a keen cyclist and had been on a couple of rides with us, so we thought he would probably approve of bicycles being at his funeral today.”
Tributes poured in for Mr Crabtree following his death, with many remembering him for delivering Betterware catalogues to people’s homes on his trusted bicycle.
