Village store celebrates ‘Rural Oscar’ success

A VILLAGE store is celebrating after landing a prestigious award at the ‘Rural Oscars’.

Moulton Village Stores was named the East of England’s best village shop/post office in the annual Countryside Alliance Awards, which celebrate the characters, produce, traditions and enterprise of the countryside through the people who make it tick.

The popular shop will now go forward to the British finals and battle it out against fellow regional winners across Britain in a bid to become overall champion. The final will be held at Parliament on Wednesday, March 30.

Store owners Mike and Kathy Dillon said they were delighted to have been recognised by their customers.

Kathy said: “It’s flattering and really nice to be appreciated. It’s nice that people care enough to vote and shows us that we are actually doing something right.

“There’s a strong community spirit around here and it’s like we’ve all won. If they didn’t support us like they do, we wouldn’t be here.”

Mike added: “Service is very important because there are lots of places where you’re just a number. We know everybody’s names and get to know our customers.”

Judge Sarah Taylor said: “This is the hub of a thriving local community. The atmosphere at the shop and post office is second-to-none.

“Moulton Village Stores is an inspiration for all local shops. Moulton would certainly be a very different place without this shop.”

Mrs Taylor said she was impressed by the shop’s focus on local produce and its support of various local enterprises, including local flowers, logs, coal and even sledges.

The store also boasts a post office, a prescription service, dry cleaning and a free delivery service.
