Urban fox attack is a wake up call
TRYING to prove to Mr Michalak (Journal Letters, July 1) how I know foxes are being dumped in the countryside could be difficult, mainly because of his head in the sand stance on the subject, but it's worth a try.
The most common way as with any subject is the written word, ie papers, magazines, etc. Then word of mouth, followed by film and media. If he dismisses all these, how was he educated I ask?
The best I can do is the film by Germaine Greer How To Kill a Fox shown on Channel 4 on Saturday, February 12, 2005, a clear admission by a pest controller that town foxes are relocated into the countryside; he deals with 1,300 a year from London.
The diet of a fox is anything it can get hold of and had the child referred to been smaller and more accessible the outcome could have been much worse.
This should be taken as a wake-up call and not be so lightly dismissed as he has done in his casual almost mocking reference to the children involved.
The fact is Mr Michalak the fox is a dangerous pest to live with, its role as rat catcher has long been gone, as it prefers the handouts given or left by humans. Otherwise why are so many millions being spent annually on pest control, mainly on rats.
With fox hunting now banned, dealing with the problem has made the stockman and gamekeeper's job more difficult and keeping on top of this pest problem is a struggle.
More and more people are keeping poultry nowadays and the talk among them always leads at some stage to fox problems, the attacks very often occurring in the daytime as the urban fox has no fear of man.
I say it again Mr Michalak rats are not released into the countryside, why foxes?
