Silver surfer Keith scoops national award

A NEWMARKET pensioner, who has done more in retirement than many people do in a lifetime, has been awarded the top prize in a national challenge.
Keith Paterson, 80, of Norfolk Avenue, was named Age UK’s joint internet champion on Monday.
He received his award from actress and Age UK ambassador June Whitfield and Martha Lane Fox, UK Digital Champion, at a glittering ceremony held in London.
One of Keith’s main achievements in retirement was to learn about computers and then set up a website – www.silverhairs.co.uk – to help older people understand computers and use the internet.
Now he has turned his hand to video and is working on developing his skills so he can help others.
But Keith is also involved in many other activities, ranging from raising money to help children at the Port Elizabeth townships in South Africa to paragliding in Turkey. Recently he has taken up wood-turning.
“I am absolutely over the moon to have won,” said Keith. “Being severely deaf means that I struggle to use the telephone so the computer is a lifeline for me. I hope I can encourage others to take the first step and get online.”
