Positive action serves as a lesson to us all

Hats off to Mr Vollenhoven (Journal, June 11) for his positive action to encourage the youth of the area to participate in the great game of cricket.

I contrast that with the tone or Mr Reed’s missive bemoaning javelins landing in the cricket area at his local school and see two very important distinctions.

Mr Vollenhoven is passionate about his sport but has not elevated it above others – with the Olympics coming to our country for the first time in most peoples’ lifetime, perhaps we should be encouraging more, not less javelin throwing?

Indeed, with a pedigree running from Tessa Sanderson to Fatima Whitbread and of course to the great and charming Steve Backley, it could be argued we have more of a javelin heritage than a cricketing one.

Mr Vollenhoven has identified a problem and taken the time to do something positive about it. It is a lesson to us all.

I recently read a fine book called A Complaint Free World on how to stop complaining and start enjoying the life you always wanted.

I would not wish to use your newspaper to support the sale of a book, but I would like to support its sentiments which are embodied in the fine efforts of Mr Vollenhoven.
