Police are just tax collectors
SORRY, I can't congratulate Sgt Phil Payne on his new position with Mildenhall's so-called Safer Neighbour Team (Journal, October 8).
Hopefully he and it won't be around too long, listening to the Conservatives, when they get in next time.
The days of the evil speed camera is numbered. The sergeant knows full well from his 17 years with the Serious Collisions Unit at Haverhill that, according to the Department of Transport, only six per cent of accidents are caused by drivers exceeding the speed limit.
Of more than two million motorists fined for so-called speeding not one was caught on a speed camera hurting anyone.
So where is the evidence exceeding the speed limit kills? The police claim speed cameras save lives year on year.
Recently a leading Parliamentary group announced that over the past five years fatalities have increased by more than a quarter in Cambridge despite an increase in speed cameras.
More than half of the motorists fined were pensioners, jobless, and low paid, to whom a 60 fine is often half their weekly income.
A recent survey found three out of four people say they no longer have any confidence in the police.
Police morale has never been so low; 600 call in sick with stress every day.
This rotten government has reduced the best police force in the world to tax collecting.
