FORMER racehorse transport operator James Martin Ratcliffe died suddenly of a heart attack after a two-year battle with cancer on January 25 at West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds. He was 70.

Mr Ratcliffe, who was known as Jim, lived at Moorland Stud, Kentford, having previously lived in Chippenham for 20 years and also in Exning.

Born in Tetbury and educated at Tetbury Grammar School, he started his horse transport operation in 1983 and built it up into a thriving business before selling it in 2009.

He loved hunting, and for eight seasons was master of the Grove and Rofford Foxhounds based at Newark in Nottinghamshire.

He also enjoyed horseracing.

Mr Ratcliffe is survived by his wife, Jenny, and leaves three sons, Karl, Simon and Jason, a daughter, Julie, seven grandchildren, David, Alice, Claire, Laura, Amy, Russell and Toby, and two great-grandchildren, Daisy and Henry. He also leaves a brother, Colin.

His funeral was held at St Margaret’s Church, Chippenham, on February 3 and the Rev Mike Banyard officiated.
