Obituary: Dorothy Bland

FORMER Bedford Lodge Hotel receptionist, Dorothy Sylvia Bland, of Mat Dawson Close, Newmarket, died at the home of her daughter on December 24, 2011, after a short illness. She was 82.

Born in Newcastle, she attended Pendower School until she was evacuated to Workington during the war years.

In 1949 she moved to Wantage when she married Robert Bland and then to Newmarket in 1954 to live at Stanley House Estate where her husband worked in racing.

As well as working as a receptionist at the hotel for many years, she had also been a member of the St Agnes’ Church parochial church council, the Mothers’ Union, a collector for The Children’s Society and a volunteer at The Stable cafe.

Among her other enjoyments were reading, flower arranging, photography and spending time with her family along with having 23 timeshare holidays in Malta.

Mrs Bland leaves three daughters, Caroline, Sylvia and Dorothy, 10 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Another daughter, Elsie, died in 1999. She is also survived by a sister, Peggy.

Her funeral was held at St Mary’s Church, Newmarket, on January 9 and Father John Hardy took the service. Mark Rodman was the organist.
