Obituary: Daisy Clarke
Daisy Clarke died at her home in Childwick House, Newmarket, on January 3. She was 90.
Born in Saxon Street, near Newmarket, she was the youngest child of Sarah and Norman Burling. She entered service aged 14 in Cambridge, cycling home on her day off and returning the next day.
When war was declared, she opted to work a 12-hour shift day at the flax factory in Fordham Road, Newmarket, and later was given the option of working in the Newmarket Hospital kitchens.
In 1942, when she was 19, she married Albert Hensby and the couple had a son, John, in 1944, and a daughter, Christine, in 1948. Mr Hensby died in 1966.
Later, in 1973, she married Richard Clarke, a widower with three married children, and together they enjoyed travelling throughout Britain. Unfortunately he died in 2000. They had by then moved to George Gibson Close, Exning.
As her health deteriorated Mrs Clarke moved into Childwick House in 2009. She had battled with Alzheimer’s disease for the past three years and thanks to the care of the staff at Childwick, she was able to pass away in her own flat with her daughter beside her.
She leaves John and Christine, stepchildren, Ann Last, and Derek and Michael Clarke and an extended family of many grandchildren.
A celebration of life was held at Exning Methodist Chapel on January 15 conducted by the Rev Graham Locking with Joan Fleet as organist.
Mrs Clarke had predesigned the details of her service, where donations were received for the University of Cambridge, Autism Research Centre, as her youngest grandchild is autistic.
Family mourners were: John and Heather Hensby, Christine, John and David Scotchmere, Matthew and Catherine Hensby (rep Sharon, Zillah and families), Anita, Kevin, Alana and Scott Green (Hayley Green), Pamela and Terry Ball (Hazel and Dennis Woollard, and Janet Woollard), Janet and John Ransome (Richard and Michael Ransome), Ann and Les Bishop, Eric Cole (Ann Cole and David Cole), Ann Last, Keith Charman, John Last and Jean, Rachel Smith, Lisa and Jeff Alcock, Dean and Tracy Last, Carol and Michael Clarke, Darran Clarke, Derek Clarke (Daphne Clarke) and Catherine Tyte.
