NEWMARKET JOURNAL FEB 2012. LOCAL MP MATTHEW HANCOCK AT THE BRITISH RACING SCHOOL IN NEWMARKET, RIDING EX JUMPER OUR VIC OVER 7 FURLONGS DURING HIS VIST.

NEWMARKET MP Matthew Hancock got the leg-up on a Cheltenham Festival winner when he visited the British Racing School on Friday.

Our Vic won the 2008 Ryanair Chase and Aintree’s Totesport Bowl – beating none other than Kauto Star.

Formerly trained by David Pipe, he is now enjoying semi retirement at the Snailwell Road school, helping train the jockeys of the future.

Mr Hancock was visiting the school as part of National Apprenticeship Week, and, as well as seeing the training that it offers, sampled it first hand when he rode Our Vic up the gallops upside of one of the school’s foundation apprenticeship students.

He also watched conditional jockey training and had a go on the latest horse simulator.

“Apprenticeships allow people to earn and learn at the same time, while significantly increasing their potential future earnings, said Mr Hancock.

“But the benefits go wider than that – every £1 spent on an apprenticeship returns an estimated benefit of £18 to the economy.

“The British Racing School is a superb place for apprentices, who work exceptionally hard, both contributing and gaining a great deal.

“Getting to join in and train on Our Vic, a horse that has beaten Kauto Star no less, was a real thrill.”
