Margaret Canning

MARGARET Canning, of Falmouth Street, Newmarket, died at West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds, on July 12 after a short illness.

She was 62.

Born at West Suffolk General Hospital, she lived in Cowlinge as a child but later lived in Newmarket where she attended the secondarymodern school.

Her first job was as a secretary at Newmarket Police Station before becoming medical secretary in the Xray department at Newmarket Hospital.

While raising her family, she became self-employed and worked as secretary and book-keeper for many companies, including quantity surveyors, farmers and feed suppliers.

For many years she worked in a voluntary capacity for Newmarket Roman Catholic Church.

Her role changed but over time included preparing and publishing the weekly newsletter, preparing accounts and acting as the minutes secretary for the parochial church council.

Although she had retired from these roles, her connections

with St Mary's Church, Newmarket, continued as relatively recently she assisted with the relaunch of the parish magazine, which she had responsibility for preparing and publishing up until her death.

Mrs Canning is survived by her husband Mike and leaves daughter Bev and son Ben.

Her body was received into Newmarket Roman Catholic Church on July 16 in a short service conducted by Deacon John Morrill and her funeral service took place the following day when Monsignor Tony Rogers, assisted by Deacon John Morrill and Father Geoffrey Smith, officiated.

Mark Rodman was the organist.
