James Darkins

THE funeral of James (Jim) Darkins, took place at St James' Church, Icklingham, on June 15.

Mr Darkins, of Churchill Drive, Mildenhall, died on June 5 at West Suffolk Hospital, Bury St Edmunds.

He was 84.

Born and brought up in Icklingham, he joined the Royal Navy when he was 17 and served from 1944 to 1947.

On his return, and as a welder by trade, he worked for Elveden Estates for many years, and then later long-term for Cinetronics.

Finally, and until he retired at 65, he was employed at Norfolk Greenhouses in Mildenhall.

Unfortunately, a week after he retired he had a stroke but was still able to drive his car and do a lot of the things he used to enjoy including visits to the Cheerful Friday Stroke Club in Newmarket, going to the pub, playing pool and socialising with friends, gardening and family outings.

He is survived by his wife Mary and leaves two daughters, Sarah and Lucy, and two grandsons, William and Edward.

The service was conducted by the Rev Dan Mullin and the organist was John Ramsbottom.

Family mourners were: Mary Darkins (widow), Sarah Darkins, Lucy Franklin, Edward Franklin, Richard Tubby, William Gibbs and Edward Gibbs.
