Enforce parking or villages will suffer - letter
I READ with interest your article (Journal February 9th) concerning fines for vehicle parking on verges.
In a country that is now massively over-populated, that is to say too many people, too many building programmes and too many cars on the road, this is something that should be considered for institution nationwide.
In the hurly-burly of modern living, in numerous cases only scant regard is paid towards the look of the place, or indeed what sort of damage indiscriminate parking causes.
Where I reside, it is common to see delivery lorries mount the kerb, park on the grass, and in consequence leave ruts in excess of 10 cms deep. Not only do they leave it to others to effect repairs, but at the same time probably cause damage to water meter housings and underground pipes and cables.
Unless there are laws, you cannot force people to do anything and I understand the problems associated with enforcement, but I do think the situation needs to be addressed before towns and villages become churned-up eyesores.
Clearly, the police need to be given the powers to act when appropriate and our councils need to provide adequate support in the way of prohibition notices.
