‘Brilliant’ Newmarket maths student gets Cambridge offer
NEWMARKET JOURNAL FEB 2011. RICARD ALLITT FROM NEWMARKET, STUDYING MATHS IN CAMBRIDGE.
A FORMER Newmarket College student, whose interest in maths began as a toddler, could soon be studying his favourite subject at Cambridge University.
Eighteen-year-old Richard Allitt, who lives in Valley Way, has been offered a place to read maths and computer science at Robinson College.
The one-time pupil at Houldsworth Valley Primary School and Scaltback Middle School is currently studying A-levels in maths, further maths, computing and physics at Long Road Sixth Form College in Cambridge.
During his first year there he was one of two students who won £1,000 for the college at the Microsoft Think Computer Science conference.
His maths teacher, Stephen Warr, said: “We are delighted that Richard has got a place at Cambridge. It is very well deserved as he is a brilliant mathematician.”
Richard said that he had been interested in maths and computing for as long as he could remember.
“My mother says I used to count the carrots in the supermarket when I was a toddler and I taught myself to do computer programming.”
He has recently designed a game to help teach primary school children directions using a rabbit on a grid.
