Booming Rugby Club forgotten

IN LAST week's edition of the Journal there was an article in which the deliberations of the council over the planning applications for 1,200 homes on the Hatchfield Farm site was reported.

Mention was also made at the same time of the council's consideration

for a new home for Newmarket Town Football Club.

As the chairman of Newmarket Rugby Club, I wish Newmarket Town every success in their search.

However, I find it very disappointing that the council, despite being

fully aware of the situation, appear to be ignoring the other major sporting club in the town who also desperately need to find a new home,

namely Newmarket Rugby Club.

The success of the rugby club means that we have long ago outgrown our current home at Scaltback Middle School, a site that is soon to disappear anyway in the reorganisation of the local schools, probably by 2012, so within the next two years we need to locate a ground with an absolute minimum of 15 acres to support the three pitches, car parking and clubhouse that is needed for the club to continue to function and offer rugby to the wider community of Newmarket.

As a club we provide rugby teams for playing members whose ages range from seven to our oldest current playing member at 60.

Our first team sit proudly at the head of Eastern Counties Division

One and can confidently look forward to playing London Division Rugby next season, the youth section of the club regularly triumph in local

tournaments and supply many players to the County and Eastern Counties

representative squads.

Unless the council begins to treat this matter with the urgency required, there is a great danger that they will watch as a successful local club that provides sport to a membership of almost 500 people has to close.
